Bill Thrasher's A Journey to Victorious Praying: Finding Discipline and Delight in Your Prayer Life is a rich tapestry that weaves together the various disciplines of the spiritual life into a full portrait of what Christian prayer is. Early on, Thrasher identifies prayer as "helplessness plus faith" and recognizes the need to "[open] up our needy lives to [God]" (page 19). He goes on to discuss a number of topics that relate to prayer -- what to do when you're not sure what to pray (chapter 8) and the role of Scripture in prayer (chapter 11). But it's chapters 20-22 that are the most helpful for me -- on the relationship of prayer to fasting.
This is one of those books that one really should take the time to read through slowly -- there are gems on just about every page.
