In The Characters of Christmas, Daniel Darling takes a fresh look at the characters that show up in the biblical accounts of Jesus’ birth–Zechariah and Elizabeth, Joseph, Mary, the angels and shepherds, the innkeeper, Herod, the wise men, Simeon and Anna, and Jesus’ ancestors. Darling looks at the historical context of each individual as well as their character qualities (or lack thereof), and applies their examples to our lives today. Each chapter ends with reflection questions for personal or group study and a suggested Christmas song. The book is intended to be read during the Christmas season and is devotional in style.
Of all the chapters, the one that challenged me most was Joseph and his example of faithful obedience to God. He consistently did the “next right thing” in spite of the personal cost of comfort, reputation or safety. That is a legacy I’d be glad to pass on!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher (Moody) in exchange for my review.
