Have you ever wondered why Rahab, the prostitute in Jericho, helped the Israelite spies who came to check out the city? In this book, author Tessa Afshar, paints a completely believable picture of this biblical heroine and how she may have become motivated to follow the one true God.
Anyone who has ever felt unworthy because of past sins, will be touched in a special way by Rahab's story. She learns that no matter how tarnished, she is the Lord's treasured gem and He loves her. Because God forgives her so lavishly, Rahab learns to offer forgiveness to those who have wounded her.
Little is actually known about this ancestress of Christ, but Ms. Afshar does rely upon the information supplied in Joshua 1-10, the book of Ruth, and Matthew 1:1-17. She also reminds us, in her author's notes that:
"The best way to study the Bible is not through a novel, but simply to read the original. This story can in no way replace the transformative power that the reader will encounter in the Scriptures."
Reading pearl in the sand, will hopefully encourage you to go back to the Scripture and experience the story of Rahab fresh eyes. There are discussion questions at the end, so this would make a good choice for a book club.
