Part of the reason I write about prayer is because I want to learn more about it. So when given the opportunity to review Prayer: Communing with God in Everything–Collected Insights from A.W. Tozer, I took it.
W.L. Seaver compiled these collected insights from Tozer’s writings and sermons. Then he added his own thoughts to them by restating, expanding, or weaving Tozer’s thoughts together. The result is a wonderful book on prayer that will both encourage and challenge you to grow in your prayer life.
Now, will this book teach you how to pray? No. As Tozer says, “Some churches now advertise courses on how to pray. How ridiculous! That is like giving a course on how to fall in love.” So, this book does not teach you how to pray. Rather, it does something better. It encourages us to fall in love with God, to have a personal and unique relationship with God, and to pour our heart out in prayer to God. In short, to commune with God in everything.
This book serves as an excellent primer on understanding prayer as an encounter with God. Tozer’s style is both easy to read and thought-provoking. Every sentence is filled with a depth of wisdom characteristic of a man who practices what he preaches. Thus, we are challenged to live an honest, bold, spirit-filled life that prays.
Tozer’s insights into prayer will leave you with a desire to put the book down and get on your knees to pray. You will both long and love to pray.
This book will have you returning to it time and time again for new lessons, reminders, and encouragement in your prayer life. If you are humble and teachable, then picking up this book will change your prayer life.
