Spiritual Leadership Review

Book Review:

J. Oswald Sanders' Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence for Every Believer has been through a variety of printings since its initial 1967 release, but this one includes a "Small Group Study Guide" that will prove influential for a new generation. I particularly love Chapter 1, "An Honorable Ambition", which begins where every Christian leadership must begin: With humility. "Ambition which centers on the glory of God and welfare of the church is a mighty force for good." The church needs more leaders, not less, but the kind of leaders we need are "authoritative, spiritual, and sacrificial".

Sanders then turns his insights into a close study of Peter and Paul -- examples of those who shepherd God's people with the humility necessary to embody Christ in the world. Sanders also explores a number of the disciplines that make Christian leaders.

Spiritual Leadership is a modern classic that I believe will make a unique contribution to the lives of a new generation of Christian leaders. It's one of those books you should re-read every couple of years.
