Format: Hardcover
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review as part of their blogger review program.
I have read quotes of Charles Spurgeon and heard stories here and there, but not much else and certainly not of his wife, Susie. I also do not read many biographies and have made it a goal to read more this year.
I loved reading about Susie and the beautiful relationship her and Charles had with each other, with Chris at the center. I loved reading of how they met and how they ended up courting. Susie's walk with Christ and how she loved and served her husband, certainly challenged me and encouraged me. The author shares a lot about Charle's depression and how Susie ministered to him in that time and of Susie's unnamed illness and how even with traveling, Charles ministered to her. There is also quite a bit of Victorian history in this book. Also I loved reading about Susie's book drive for poor pastors, as well as seeing the photos.
Why 4 and not 5 stars? I found the author to be a bit repetitive at times, bringing up things discussed in one chapter again a few chapters later. I also felt at the beginning the writing was not very smooth, going back and forth with time line and story line. However, the writing style does smooth out around chapter 9 or so.
I did still very much enjoy reading about Susie Spurgeon and her life as the wife of Charles. I learned many new things about this couple and loved how not only did they strive to share the gospel message but also live it.
