Why observe Lent? That is the question Asheritah Ciuciu asks at the beginning of this Lent devotional. She challenges us to use this season as a time of reflection and preparation, focusing our hearts on Jesus and his love for us and for others.
This book contains 6 weekly family devotional, 40 daily devotionals (including a Scripture passage, a short reading, a challenge for thought/action, and a prayer), and 6 weekly lists of optional activities to help families engage with the themes they’ve been studying. Additional resources are also available online. It can be easy to read the gospel stories quickly, without a lot of thought, because we’ve heard them so often. I found the challenges to be aptly-named! Ciuciu does well at calling us to consider and apply in our own lives the example of Jesus.
As Ciuciu says, I have often felt that Easter, arguably the most meaningful and important celebration for Christians, has a way of slipping up on me without a lot of forethought and preparation. This devotional is an excellent resource and I appreciate the way it includes the family. If you’ve never observed Lent before, it begins on February 26 this year and you still have time to order the book. =)
Ciuciu is also the author of Unwrapping the Names of Jesus, an Advent devotional similar in style, that I reviewed here.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher (Moody) in exchange for my review.
