Your Money Map Review

Book Review:

Whenever I'm driving and running errands in the afternoon, I have the great pleasure of hearing the Money Wise Live podcast on our local Christian radio station. I enjoy the advice offered up from the new (ish) host, Rob West, and his co-host Steve Moore. Without fail these guys point people to what the Bible has to say about money, finances, and living well. Money Wise, I believe, was initially hosted by Howard Dayton, the author of this book. Occasionally he still appears on the program, too, along with Ron Blue and other notable Christian financial experts. It's a great program.

And this is a great book. I've read a lot of financial publications in the last few years, and this is one of the most comprehensive but easy to follow outlines for solid financial planning and potential freedom that I've seen. Dayton divides his book into six sections - each section has 3-5 chapters. The first two sections are mainly preparation and introduction and give you an unambiguous picture of the focus of the book: Our money is God's, and we're just stewards of it, so let's get a firm plan together now, no matter what your current financial situation, to steward it well and faithfully. Easy? No, for most people it's probably pretty tough. But important. The seven "stops" on the map, sections 3-6, are essentially financial goals to hit before moving on to the next "stop." The beauty of this book is that it makes this ultimate goal of Financial Freedom seem doable with good, honest, and hard work. Like I said, not easy, but doable.

And yes, it's even doable for you if you've got debt and a less than a six-figure income.

I think this would make a fine high school "financial plan" curriculum book. But if you have younger kids too, I'd encourage you to make it a family affair and allow them to benefit from the wisdom in advance of their earning years. Imagine if we all got off on the right foot from the start!

So all in all, highly recommended. There are older versions of the book available too if you're looking to save a little money.

I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
