Moody Publishers sent me a gifted copy of this book, and all opinions are my own.
I absolutely adored this book! Rhodes writes it in a "narrative nonfiction" style, so it's a fast page-turning biography of the lives of Spurgeon (Charles and Susie), of their lives, and the original sources of their letters to each other are incredible. Spurgeon was a wise and bold preacher, and he loved his family well, and I appreciate Rhodes' thorough research to bring Charles and Susie to life. I also enjoyed learning about all the social work the Spurgeon family invested in, whether it was Susie's book distribution program or investing in the next generation of young men being trained in the faith, opening their homes to many, they tirelessly gave their lives to help those around them. Above all, their love for each other, as evidenced by their love letters, is beautiful.
Rhodes does have another book about Susie Spurgeon (titled "Susie: The Life and Legacy of Susannah Spurgeon") that I intend to go read.
